MediaWeek: Univision unveils network ad sales

"While Univision takes in about three times as much revenue in the upfront as its rival Telemundo, Lawenda believes there is still a huge opportunity for growth. And much like the Telemundo sales executives, Univision plans to sell the value of the Hispanic viewer rather than specifically going after its rival Hispanic network."

L.A. Times: Crack open Mexico's media duopoly

"For the last two years, hopes were high -- no, passions were roused -- that Telemundo, producer of programs such as the megahit "Body of Desire" (in which Old Pedro returns as hot young Salvador) would crack open Mexico's hermetically sealed broadcast industry and launch that country's third network. But even Old Pedro couldn't have overcome the death grip Mexico's two media powerhouses have on the market. Grupo Televisa and its smaller rival TV Azteca have a chokehold on viewer choice and have successfully blocked meaningful competition. What's needed now is political courage to challenge the duopoly, but that's nonexistent: Politicians who dare are likely to find candidates from their parties somehow left off the air."

Editor & Publisher: How to be successful Latino publisher

"I believe much of the success of ImpreMedia, now the largest Latino publication holding company in the U.S., stems directly from its decision to allow its publications to maintain local strategic and tactical autonomy while building mission-level corporate synergies, especially in national advertising and shared special sections. The focus must first be on identifying the target audience and advertiser base, because if you start with oranges, you rarely end up with lemonade."

USATODAY reviews Hollywoods attempts to woe Latinos

"Hispanics are the USA's fastest-rising demographic of ticket buyers, a study by the Motion Picture Association of America shows. On average they saw 11 movies last year, up from eight in 2006. The typical moviegoer saw eight last year.

Much is made in the political debate over the estimated 12 million undocumented workers in the USA, but the total Hispanic population, including American citizens, is close to 42 million. That number is projected by the Pew Research Center to triple by 2050."

Miama Herald reviews Gustavo Cisnero's Venevision

Through its array of companies, Venevisión can sign an artist to its record label, promote the artist in its TV shows, sell the song as a ringtone, use the song as a soundtrack in its soap operas and put the artist on a concert tour.

''What Cisneros has been able to do brilliantly is create true synergy,'' says Jerry Haar, associate dean and business professor at Florida International University. ``It's a combination of management and vision.''

WSJ: Mexico's Televisa and NBC's Telemundo team up at the expense of Univision

Telemundo wanted to use a network in Mexico in part to produce "Made in Mexico" content -- especially saccharine soap operas -- that is very popular with Mexicans and Mexican-Americans who live in the U.S. Univision, the dominant Spanish-language broadcaster in the U.S., is the market leader partly because it uses Televisa's programming fare. Telemundo is a distant second in the U.S. Hispanic market.

....

The arrangement with Telemundo is a big win for Televisa, which for decades was the only private broadcaster in Mexico. For one thing, it puts an end to any talk about a third TV broadcaster. By allowing a U.S. broadcaster onto its networks, the deal may also help Televisa deflect criticism in the U.S. and Mexico that it squashes competition.

Chicago Sun-Times: Latino cookware gets cuisine specific.

"Companies have recognized that profits can be cooked up by being in U.S. kitchens to serve a growing Hispanic population that wants the tools to prepare authentic cultural cuisines.

NYT: Univision remakes ABC show making inroads with Latinos thanks to Eva Longoria

"In one of the more unusual programming moves of recent years, the Spanish-language network Univision in January began televising “Amas de Casa Desesperadas,” a remake of the ABC hit “Desperate Housewives.”

Not subtitled or dubbed, this is a new version of the comic soap opera-mystery. Except it’s not."

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/16/arts/television/16jens.html?ref=arts

My comments: It's funny how Univision can't take it when anything in English gets buzz for Lationos.

LA Times reviews Fox SearchLight's first Latino movie, a Spanish-language immigrant movie - Under the Same Moon

"Sweet-natured but tough-minded, "Under the Same Moon" arrives in theaters at a time when politicians, pundits and the public are engaging in (mainly) verbal slugfests over immigration, a recurrent hot-button issue in American history. But although Villalobos deliberately wove migrant-related themes into her screenplay, she agrees with Riggen that the movie is more of a personal than a political statement."

http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/movies/la-ca-moon16mar16,1,1194882.story

My comments: I saw a premiere of this very touching and heartwarming production at the National Association of Minority Media Executives conference last summer. The film is definitely more personal than political. It's not a must see, but a go see.

NPR's Get My Vote gets National Council of La Raza to post a video

MediaWeek: Univision bests major networks in youth demographic

"Hispanic network Univision was the second highest-rated broadcast network in prime time among adults 18-34 for the week ending March 9, averaging more viewers in the demo than English-language networks ABC, CBS, NBC and The CW, according to Nielsen Media Research data."

http://www.mediaweek.com/mw/news/networktv/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003723381

As long as marketers still want to buy a big number delivered by Nielsen then Univision will do well. But Nielsen has nothing on the data driven marketers using Google.

WSJ: The story behind the Obama music videos - mariachi and reggaeton

On a plane last year, Miguel Orozco closed his copy of Sen. Barack Obama's memoir, "The Audacity of Hope," and decided he wanted to help introduce the presidential candidate to fellow Hispanics. Mr. Orozco, a producer of educational films who isn't a musician, took out a pen and began writing a song for Mr. Obama on a napkin. ......
Last month, a Chicago supporter contacted Mr. Orozco requesting permission to play the "Como se Dice" reggaeton and a video that Mr. Orozco made with photos and speeches of the candidate. It was played at an Obama event in the heart of Latino Chicago on the city's South Side. In attendance was Irma Ruiz-Nakachi of Glenview, Ill., who had been feeling detached from the Obama campaign as a Latina. When she heard the reggaeton, she says, "the words were so awesome and inspirational. It made me feel that Latinos can connect to the campaign."

Miami Herald: Univision chief behind Clinton

It's March 4, and Haim Saban can barely tear his eyes away from the big-screen TV that sits on the wall of his expansive office. Primaries in Texas and Ohio could make or break his presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton.

My comments: Could Saban's support for Clinton be helping her win over Latinos? Univision is the prime source of news and entertainment for the Hispanics.

SpikedOnline: Myth of Latino voting block

The myth of the Latino voting bloc: Clinton, Obama and McCain are frantically courting Hispanics - but in an era of fluid, fly-by-night politics, blocs are unpredictable.
In many important states - most notably New Jersey, Florida, Obama’s home state of Illinois, and Texas - the Latino vote is a vital one to win. According to the New Democrat Network, a liberal think tank that focuses on Latino voters, they make up almost twice as much of the electorate as they did in 2000, up from 7.5million to 14million. By some estimates, one in three Americans will be Latino by 2040.
http://www.spiked-online.com/index.php?/site/article/4636/

My comments: There's no Latino voting block. The term Latino is just a lame way for people who don't understand us to lump us together.

WashingtonPost: Clinton thinks Latinos can't tell time

AP: Young US born Latinos want to be recognized as Americans

" "When I travel cross-country and go to conferences to talk to young people, I tell them: 'Don't forget. Yes, you are Cuban, Mexican or Peruvian, but don't forget you're also American.' They get off their seats and start clapping. No one is recognizing their Americanness, and that's what these kids desperately want to demonstrate," Petersen said."
