Researcher: Latinos on MySpace, not Facebook

Here's the story on the Guardian's web site.
Social websites expose class divide.
Here's an excerpt:
Typical Facebook users, she (Danah Boyd, a researcher at the University of California and internet sociologist) said, "tend to come from families who emphasise education and going to college. They are primarily white, but not exclusively". MySpace, on the other hand, "is still home for Latino and Hispanic teens, immigrant teens" as well as "other kids who didn't play into the dominant high school popularity paradigm".

Diverse Magazine: HISPANIC Online community in 1996 and its impact on journalism

I was quoted in "Black Issues In Higher Education" about the on-line community I created within America Online for US Hispanics.

The story, by a colleague Roberto Rodriguez, deals with the issues of journalism and the state of minority issues online way back in 1996.

MediaPosts' SearchInsider: Oye como va? Aqui podemos buscar en ingles!

MediaPost equates the number of Latinos with the number of people who need to use Spanish. Gag! Won't US marketers ever get it. This is the typical Anglo ignorance, thinking of Hispanics as foreigners.

Houston Chronicle: Latinos do learn to speak English, according to .... me!

I wrote a column for the Hispanic Link news service arguing Latinos do learn to speak English and in fact are losing Spanish language abilities. It was picked up by the Houston Chronicle.

Here's an excerpt.
In a country where the term "Spanish-speaker" passes as a synonym for "Hispanic," as much as 20 percent of the nation's Latino population does not speak the language of Cervantes, according to census data. Even Latino celebrities, including '50s rocker Richie Valens, '70s TV star Eric Estrada and '90s Tejano superstar Selena Quintanilla Perez, grew up not speaking the language.

Public discourse on Latinos almost always focuses on speaking Spanish as if it were some kind of Latino racial trait, one genetically hard-wired into us before birth.

The story link I found today is not hosted on the Chronicle site, but it's linked below:

Dominican B-ball player in Sacramento gets non-Latinos executives giddy about reaching Mexican-Americans. Wha?

VivirLatino questions the hype that non-Latino executives have spun about hiring a Latino on the Sacramento Kings team - Francisco García. My guess is that a French guy on the Spurs dating and engaged to Eva Longoria has about the same ethnic appeal. It's a stretch. But non-Latino execs always seem to get excited about things that to me border on the offensive.

Journalist Reality TV show

Univision has come up with a new reality show that pits journalists for a job on one of their shows.

Is it any wonder, I decided to get out of the business in 1992.

If jobs are so scarce that you have to win on on a reality TV series, then it's a skill set that has no value. Luckily most news organizations aren't like Univision.

IHispanic - Nacho Hernandez

I took a detour to LaJolla, Ca. to meet Nacho Hernandez, the principal at Ihispanic, an on-line marketing firm, and the founder of mexgrocer.com. I meet up with Nacho at the conclusion of the May 2007 users' conference for the Visual Sciences web analytics tools in San Diego.

Hernandez is a Mexican-born entrepreneur focused on US Latinos and Latin America. His office is based in lovely LaJolla, CA. behind a Vons on Torrey Pines, not far from the beach. Nacho also is the lead behind the Latino version of the SES Strategies conference.

It was great to confer with him and share war stories about the space. I haven't worked with him yet, but he seems on the up and up. And he seems pretty connected at Google.

Like most folks born in Mexico, he seemed a bit taken aback when I told him my father's family has been in Texas since it was part of Mexico. Y si somos puro Mexicano!

As business meetings go, it was a great introduction.
