Reuters: delayed Televisa-Univision trial helps Univision

"Univision, which heavily depends on Televisa's programming for its prime time line-up at its three networks, would be hurt if the deal falls apart.

"It is not convenient for Univision to scratch the relationship with Televisa," said HSBC analyst Jaime Aguilera."

My comments: Televisa doesn't need Univision. It's better off squeezing every penny they can get out of Univision.

Reuters: Televisa-Univision court battle postponed to July 1st

Leading Spanish-language broadcaster Televisa and partner Univision have pushed back a trial over the Mexican company's bid to pull out of a programming deal, a sign that an out-of-court settlement may be in the works.

New market research - young Latinos bilingual and embrace new technologies

“Unlike their ancestors, young Latinos embrace technology, are predominantly bi-lingual, and are the leaders of both their families and their larger communities ..."

L.A. Times previews this week's legal clash of titans - Televisa vs. Univision

"The trial is set to begin Tuesday, pitting Televisa's 40-year-old media scion Emilio Azcarraga Jean against Univision's new owners, led by Los Angeles billionaire Haim Saban, the company's chairman. Televisa is demanding that it be allowed to sever all ties with Univision, which has become the dominant Spanish-language broadcaster in the U.S. largely because it can run Televisa's popular programming."

Miami Herald: Bigger than an earthquake: Televisa, Univision content trial starts Tuesday

"
A jury trial is scheduled to get under way Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles on Televisa's two-year bid to end its programming supply contract with Univisión, the nation's largest Spanish-language media company.

At stake are the top rated prime-time telenovelas and other shows supplied by the Mexican company. These Televisa shows are key to Univisión's audience appeal -- and bring in hundreds of millions of dollars in advertising revenue for the Univisión network."

My comments: If Televisa breaks free of Univision, get ready to watch Univision's stock sink into the toilet and Televisa to get rich in the process.

MultiChannelNews: Hispanic media upfronts going downscale

"It’s upfront season, and Hispanic TV networks are getting ready to present their 2008-2009 lineup to advertisers in New York City. But marketers and programmers can expect a very different dynamic from previous years, including the entry of new, smaller players to the upfront market and some big-name absentees."

My comments: The spin is the upfronts are getting strategic; the reality is the economy's hurting and buys that are not 100% ROI focused and tied to immediate sales are hurting.

MediaWeek; Univision adds more news to its line-up.

Taking advantage of its TV duopolies in four of the nation's largest markets, owned-and-operated Univision Communications stations will air a third hour of local morning news on their duopoly partners, the owned-and-operated TeleFutura stations.

... "It's a creative use of the duopoly," said Ramon Pineda, general manager of Univision's New York duopoly. "It allows us to accommodate two needs at once. We offer local news, weather, and traffic in the middle of rush hour while continuing to offer all three-hours of Despierta America, Univision's popular [network] breakfast show."

MultiChannel: All but Univision drop upfront events; Univision armed with data

"But unlike last year, when Univision put its viewers at the forefront of the well-attended event, this year the network will come to the May 14 luncheon event armed with a series of powerful research tools, studies and data that promise to give advertisers a more accurate, cost-effective way to plan and execute their media buys for the U.S. Hispanic market. In anticipation of this year’s presentation, Univision on April 9 unveiled the Fusion Project, a collaboration with Nielsen Media Research and Nielsen Homescan that melds the former’s TV viewing data with the latter’s purchasing information. Together, it should give marketers a better bang for their bucks."

Reversal of fortune

This is hysterical. You've got to see it.

D.C. United vs. Pachuca CF - Mexico

Last night, I attended the match between DC United and Pachuca CF Mexico. What a game. What an audience. The stands filled with local supporters of the local Washington team, but drew throngs of local Mexican-immigrants decked out in the flag and patriotic colors of Mexico. Pachuca made the first goal, exciting the local fans of the Mexican team, but DC United came back to score two goals for a final victory.
