My Space en español

My Space has launched a version focused on Spanish-dominant Latinos. Despite the recent Pew report that Spanish-dominant Latinos in the United States are much less likely to be on-line than English-dominant Latinos, My Space takes a page out of the tired on-line plan of AOL, Yahoo and MSN - creating a Spanish-language "Latino version."

Back in 1998, I suggested to AOL executives that their service was already the most popular with US Hispanics long before they launched any Spanish-language version. The execs were floored.

I did the same in 2006 when I met a Fox executive with connections to My Space.

Oh, the overwhelmingly white Anglo and foreign-born Latino management of these projects gets it wrong again.

I'm guessing I sound a bit pompous here. Someone pull the foot out of my mouth. But you might guess that's how I feel. I'm probably wrong here.

Ken Burns "discovers" Latinos

I don't comment about where I work. Well, actually I work at National Public Radio, the radio cousin of the Public Broadcasting Corporation, PBS. So all I'll say about the furor over Ken Burns' new show on WWII is this - read the following article on the Houston Chronicle web site.

OK, I have to say one more thing; the American G.I. Forum helped start the Latino civil rights movement. Based in the hometown of my great grandparents, Corpus Christi, Texas, the forum formed shortly after WWII, made up entirely of Mexican-American veterans of WWII.

Hello; we're Americans.

The Future of Latino Marketing

I often encounter stories about Latino marketing that so miss the mark that I have to shake my head and sigh. On the occasion when non-Latinos actually get it right, I'm initially so stunned I fall out of my chair. Once I get over the shock, I have to share with those in the know.

So here goes. Check out this article from from the Broadcasting & Cable website call the "The New World of Hispanic TV".
